The Charlottetown Abbies are looking to bounce back from what was considered by the coaching staff to be a disappointing 2010-2011 season. With Willy Whelan returning from a year long stint with the Montague Maniacs, he looks to add to an already strong defensive core with Morgan Walker also returning after a very strong rookie season. Up front, the Abbies will look to the line of Stephen Cassidy, Brett Turner and Jordan Hughes to be one of the most offensively gifted lines in the league and do the bulk of the scoring for the Abbies with key first year additions Ryan Cassidy, Parker Diamond and Ben Buchanen from the Charlottetown midget system looking to help out whenever possible. "With some experience from the older guys and some new energetic gritty forwards, we are looking to have our best season to date" Brad Larter said of the Abbies chances of competing. The Falcons enter the season with high expectations according to new head coach Greg Rivard. Sherwood is again strong in goal, back stopped by returning goalie Tyler MacDonald and newcomer, Devon Cudmore. The blueline will be anchored by Kyle Dougan and Braden Johnston. Up front, the Falcons are led by a talented group of players that include captain Alex Smith, Craig Dougan, Josh Kirkpatrick and rookie Brandon Birt.On Saturday night at 7:00, the Arsenault's Fish Mart Red Wings will host their first game since relocating from Tyne Valley last season. Manager, JC Gallant, says, "We are pleased to be playing out of the brand new Evangeline Rec Centre led by veterans TJ Campbell, Jackie Ray Bernard and Alex Micalef and a good mix of new rookies." Right out of the gate they will face the defending Don Johnson Cup and league champion Kensington Moase Plumbing & Heating Vipers.
The first week will conclude with the Vipers and Falcons meeting on Sunday night in Kensington at 7:00. The 2011 Don Johnson Cup runners up, Montague Maniacs, will start their season on Friday, October 21st, when they host the Charlottetown Abbies at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre at 8:00. The Montague-based Maniacs have 13 returning players from last season and could have a few more. With some pleasant surprises from rookie draft picks and walk-on players filling in the few remaining positions, Kings County fans should have an exciting competitive team to watch. The Maniacs have added Gerald MacNeill to its coaching staff. Gerald has a great background as a player at a high level of hockey and a terrific knowledge of the game and local players, having coached many of the Maniacs in minor hockey at the AAA level. This season's champions will get the opportunity to represent PEI at the 2012 Don Johnson Cup on April 17-22nd in St. John's Newfoundland. |
