CHARLOTTETOWN - The Holland College Hurricanes are now members of the Mark's Work Wearhouse Island Junior Hockey League.
Holland College made the official announcement last weekend. The 'Canes will join the four existing franchises - Charlottetown Abbies, Arsenault's Fish Mart Western Red Wings, Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers and Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons - for the 2012-13 season.
The Hurricanes, who play their home games out of the Charlottetown Civic Centre, revived their men's hockey program in 2010, and have spent the past two seasons operating as part of the Razzy's P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League.
"Our goal has been to create the most professional hockey program possible from Day 1," said Hurricanes general manager Daniel Cudmore. "We've made great strides in doing so, but still have work to do.
"We have a dedicated group of people on and off of the ice working very hard to bring this program to the level where we want to see it. The move to this league is the next step.
"We have a new group of scouts in place to assist in bringing the most talented hockey players to our program, and our group has already begun speaking with potential players for next season. We have a plan in which we hope to contend for a championship in the upcoming seasons. Our goal is to bring a championship banner back to Holland College."
The Hurricanes will participate in the IJHL's midget draft later this summer, and will continue to look for the top hockey talent at Holland College. Training camp opens in early September.
Head coach Ryan Maxwell is excited about joining the IJHL.
"It's a league that has a rich history, and as an organization we are very proud to be a part of," said Maxwell. "Moving to junior B allows us to continue our vision of making Holland College a destination for young hockey players looking to pursue an education while playing a high level of hockey.

"All this would not be possible without the hard work of our management team, and their desire to bring hockey back to the college and run a first-class organization. Starting now, the hard work begins. We will be working over the next few months to attract top student-athletes, as well as sponsors, to help our team succeed and ice the most competitive team possible.

"Holland College has done a tremendous job building many of the existing programs, like soccer, basketball, football, volleyball and golf to name a few. I'd like hockey to achieve the same success as these sports and bring a championship to the college. We'd like to say a big thank you to Jim Chandler, commissioner of the Island Junior Hockey League, as well as athletic director Albert Roche, for recognizing our vision and passion to grow the hockey program at Holland College."
Any potential players interested in being e-mailed an information package on the Holland College hockey program are asked to contact Cudmore at [email protected].
